Mill Spring, NC — July 21, 2019 — It was Roberto Teran Tafur (COL) aboard Dena Sienne to win the $36,000 Classic CSI 3* on Friday during Tryon Summer 6 at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC), with a fault-free effort in a time of 36.966 seconds. Santiago Lambre (MEX) and Doloris, a 2008 Dutch Warmblood mare (Harley VDL x Colorado D) owned by Aurora Rangel De Alba, earned second place with their 37.906 second jump-off round, while Todd Minikus (USA) and Calvalou, a 2007 Oldenburg gelding (Calvaro F.C. x Baloubet du Rouet) owned by Todd Minikus, LTD., claimed third-place honors with a finish of 38.12 seconds.

A total of 22 riders contested the first-round course designed by Ken Krome (USA), with six pairs returning for the jump-off. “The course was really good,” Tafur explained. “It was a little technical. The course designer is very fair and very technical. All the horses jumped great, and I think the best horse won!

“I [was up against] Todd Minikus, Santiago Lambre, Samuel Parot, and Juan Ortiz; every single one of them is a fast rider. I wanted to do my fastest course while trying to leave the jumps up, and everything just worked out for me,” Tafur shared of his strategy heading into the jump-off.

Although Tafur and the 2008 Dutch Warmblood mare (Van Gogh x Animo) owned by Walkman Horses BV were competing in the 1.50m divisions in Wellington this past winter, Tafur’s winter injury resulting in a broken knee put him and his mount out of the show ring for almost ten weeks. “This is her [Dena Sienne’s] second show back and finally she’s getting back into the groove [of things]. Sometimes, for horses that’s a little hard,” he continued. “She’s not ready for the Grand Prix this week. I have another one that’s going in it, but this one has had three days in a row [of showing] and I think that’s enough until the next show.”

Tafur concluded: “It’s a privilege for us to be here [at Tryon]. I have one horse in the Grand Prix and hopefully we will have a top three ribbon. This week is our last week here until we come back for the fall shows. I have been here many times. After this week, we will be back home in Pennsylvania for a week and then take the horses to Traverse City.”

“I loved the courses today,” Kampsen expressed of the track Dean Rheinheimer (Sheridan, IN) set for the 14 pairs in the Derby. “I love a long gallop, and it was a bunch of single jumps off the gallop and the bending lines rode right on step. I thought it was just challenging enough and it really allowed for [Mr. Fox’s] jumping style to shine and help us win the class.”

Kampsen and Mr. Fox, a six year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding (Casskeni II x Kimberly) owned by Marjorie Sugarman, earned a first-round score of 90, putting them at the top of the class to be called back last for the handy round, where they earned a score of 88.

Kampsen shared that Mr. Fox, who has not been on American soil even six months yet, is getting ready to compete at Green Incentive Finals next month but has also proven himself to be a great mount for his owner. “Mr. Fox is the horse we got for Marjorie Sugarman during the last week of WEF; he had just been imported by Brady Mitchell,” Kampsen continued. “Marjorie does the Adults on him, and will step up to the Amateur Owner’s next year. This is his sixth horse show.”

Kampsen shared that TIEC had served as a stop for Mr. Fox and several other horses in her barn to prepare further for the Incentive Finals on their way to Kentucky: “This is our second week here at Tryon. We stopped here on our way to Kentucky and it’s been a great experience! The facility is helping us to prepare the horses for [USHJA Green Hunter] Incentive Finals.”

Kampsen concluded, “It’s been great for the horses to come here to Tryon because the footing is beautiful and there’s plenty of open space to go ride in. We show a lot at WEF since we live there, so it’s nice to have a change of venue, and the weather’s much cooler here than it is in Florida right now, even this week!”
