Mill Spring, NC – July 22, 2018 – Tryon Summer VI saw Kristen Vanderveen (USA) take first and second-place honors in the $35,000 1.45m Classic CSI 2* at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC), guiding Bull Run’s Faustino De Tili through the short-course in 35.528 seconds and steering Bull Run’s Prince of Peace to second, putting in a clear jump-off round of 36.664 seconds. Vanderveen shared the podium with Manuel Torres (COL) for his efforts aboard Christofolini H, a 2007 Rheinlander gelding (Canto 16 x Balou Du Rouet) owned by Andrea Torres Guerreiro, for their 37.124 second performance in the jump-off.

Vanderveen, who previously complimented the Oscar Soberon (USA) course design earlier in the week, had already clinched the lead aboard “Frosty,” the 2005 Belgian Warmblood stallion (Berlin x Udarco) owned by Bull Run Jumpers Five, LLC, when she concluded the jump-off aboard Bull Run’s Prince of Peace, a 2009 Holsteiner gelding (Cardenio x Contender) owned by Bull Run Jumpers Six, LLC, to claim the red rosette as well.

Though Bull Run’s Faustino De Tili won the $35,000 Welcome Stake CSI 2* on Thursday just a day prior, Vanderveen noted that she had meant for Friday’s Classic Stake to be a more conservative effort as she brings the stallion back into work after a recent break. “In the jump-off I wanted to go quick and competitive with Frosty, but nothing too risky. He’s so naturally fast; I forget that I don’t need to try so hard. I actually kind of felt like I left a little bit of space for somebody to get me, but it just goes to show how fast he really is, because it ended up not really being that close,” she explained.”It’s comfortable going in with [Bull Run’s Prince of Peace] knowing you’re first with Frosty,” admitted Vanderveen. “And ‘Prince’ is still learning, so I want him to learn the jump-off, and the only way to learn is by going fast. My plan on him was to push it, and test out where we’re at, and keep getting him competitive and looking for the jumps.”

Vanderveen was undecided at the time about her strategy for Saturday, but ultimately opted to save both Bull Run’s Faustino De Tili and Bull Run’s Prince of Peace for another day, as most of the competitions ahead for the two mounts are daytime competitions, and Bull Run’s Almighty was chosen to compete under the lights.”We have a lot of daytime showing with them coming up. For the younger horse, Bull Run’s Prince of Peace, the night class is a big atmosphere here, so I’m going to wait and finish out the daytime stuff with him and then start moving him into Grand Prixs later.”[Bull Run’s] Almighty is one of my greener horses, and I’m trying to develop him. He’s a little bit older than Bull Run’s Prince of Peace, so he’s ready, but he just needs more time under the lights. I think it’s a good thing to keep pushing him and giving him the experience.”

Vanderveen and “Almighty,” the 2008 Hanoverian gelding (Caspar x Quidam De Revel) owned by Bull Run Jumpers Six, LLC, had just one rail down in the first round to finish eighth in the $70,000 Ingles Grand Prix CSI 2* as the fastest four-fault round.

Jumper Highlights

The 1.10m Jumper Division awarded Aida Sanchez Long of Chattanooga, TN, and Natalie Abouelata’s Looking Glass the champion title with Amy Foster of Coconut Creek, FL, and Persimmon, owned by Leeann Ablin, earning the reserve champion title on the week.In the 1.15m Jumper Division, Antonio Martinez from Margate, FL, was crowned champion riding VDL Haraltic, and Dianne Little of West Chester, PA, claimed reserve champion honors with Eastwood owned by Heathman Farm, LLC.The 1.15m Non Pro Jumper Division granted Maria Roberts of Collierville, TN, first-place honors aboard her own Fabolous. Second place was awarded to Mackenzie Hirsch from E Kingston, NH, with Fellow, owned by JR Show Stables, LLC.

The 1.20m Open Jumper Division awarded John Michael Durr of Shelby, NC, take the tricolor atop his own, SL Belly. Second place was claimed by Amy Foster of Coconut Creek, FL, with Leeann Ablin’s Persimmon.

The Adequan® 1.30m Open Jumper Division congratulated Benjamin Meredith of Wellington, FL, as its champion riding Annie Oakley owned by Carben Farms, LLC. Reserve honors were bestowed upon Tracy Fenney of Flower Mound, TX, with MTM Simone for MTM Farm.

In the Children’s Jumper 1.10m Division, Claire Lube of Orlando, FL, claimed first place with P.M. Jackpot owned by Katherine Dewar. Second place was awarded to Alaya Myers of Maryville, TN, with her own horse, Reprieve.

In the Low Children’s Jumper 1.0m Division, Daniel Kerins from Wellington, FL, championed the week aboard Zindora V/D Kapel, and Sydney Myers of Plantation, FL claimed reserve riding Pine Hollow Farm’s Cotswold Classic.

The Nutrena 1.40m Open Jumper Division awarded Todd Minikus of Loxahatchee, FL, the champion title with Chaco 34 owned by Maidensway. Reserve champion was awarded to Tracy Fenney of Flower Mound, TX with MTM Apple owned by MTM Farm.

In the Low Amateur Jumper 1.20m Division, Alexandra King of Wellington, FL, claimed top honors on the week with Hoover, owned by Esperanza, Inc. Amanda Minikus of Lake Worth, FL, claimed reserve honors riding Spring Girl, owned by Todd Minikus, LTD.

The Low Junior Jumper 1.20m Division awarded Mia Albelo of Coral Gables, FL, the champion title with her own Cassandra Dreams, and awarded the reserve champion title to Valentina Arenas Saravia of Guatemala with Belina, owned by Alpine Stables.

Hunter Highlights

The $2,500 USHJA National Hunter Derby on Friday congratulated Hensley Humphries of Austin, TX, aboard her own Ixion Van Het Netehof for their 175.5 total score, with Samantha Rice of Wellington, FL, piloting her own Uniek to a score of 175 to claim second. Victoria Herran achieved third aboard her own Con-Grande, scoring 169 and representing Miami, FL.The Children’s Pony Hunter Division claimed Dawson Amick of Marvin, NC, as champion on the week, guiding Beverly Crest Farm LLC’s Foxmor Starstruck, with reserve honors conferred upon McKayla Brombach of Wimberley, TX, for her efforts aboard Lee Hughes’ Versace.

Catherine Tucker (Huntersville, NC) piloted Ellen Tighe’s Steadfast to the champion title in the Baby Green Hunter 2’6″ Division, and reserve honors went to Vivianne Marzullo of Miami, FL, in the irons for Lucky Ventures, LLC aboard Handsome WH.

The Children’s Hunter Horse Division saw Elizabeth Chappell, a Charlotte, NC native, secure champion aboard her own Ambassador CWF, while Caia Watridge and Sweet Oak Farm’s Sunman earned the reserve ribbon on behalf of St. Augustine, FL.

In the Foothills Child/Adult Hunter 2′ Division, Caitlyn Boyd and Riley Funkhouser-Haines’ entry Who’s Your Buddy emerged as champions to represent Thomasville, GA, with reserve honors awarded to Chloe Peterson (Southwest Ranches, FL) and her own mount, The Great Escape.

Chloe Peterson and her own The Great Escape topped the Short/Long Stirrup Hunter 2′ Division, sharing the podium with reserve champion Lexie Kate Crumbaker of Tallahassee, FL, riding Jessica Hunkiar’s Remington.

The Gardner-Webb University Pre-Children’s Hunter 2’6″ Division recognized Anabella Cottone of Southwest Ranches, FL, for her efforts aboard her own Aurora to earn the tricolor ribbon on the week, alongside Helen Ann Herndon of Montgomery, AL, who received reserve honors for her guidance of Skymiles for owner Kirstin Murphy.

Wyette Felton (Milton, GA) piloted Bennett Bunn Plantation’s Mr. Bojangles to victory in the Pony Hunter Division, and reserve champion on the week was Lauren Studstill of Lakeland, GA, riding Avery Griffin’s Girl on Fire.Catherine Tucker claimed another champion title on the week, this time riding Kiss Kiss in the USHJA Hunter 2’6″ Division for owner Sully Williams, while Vivianne Marzullo and Handsome WH collected a second reserve title.The USHJA Hunter 2’9″/3′ Division welcomed Gisele Beardsley-O’Grady of Tryon, NC, as its champion aboard Katelyn Fahey’s Ariotte, with Diane Little of West Chester, PA, claiming reserve honors on the week with James Doyle’s Daveney GGF.

The conclusion of Tryon Summer VI on Saturday, July 21, also marked the end of the Tryon Summer Series. Following next week’s 2018 USPC Charles Owen Championships East, Presented by Flair, LLC and Airowear, July 25-29, the venue will not host competition again until the FEI World Equestrian Games™ Tryon 2018, hosted from September 11-23, 2018. The Tryon Fall Series presented by Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport will commence on October 3, 2018, and will feature four weeks of CSI 2*, 3*, and 5* competition, alongside hunter, jumper, and equitation competition.
