The Gladiators are coming! Each Gladiator Spotlight will feature one of the players who will be competing during Gladiator Polo™ presented by Coca-Cola  on September 16th at the Tryon International Equestrian Center! Meet one of our Gladiators, Juan Martin Obregon, who will play for Team Spartanburg presented by Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport.

Q: Where are you from originally?

A: I am originally from Argentina and I still live there now.

Q: When did you start playing polo?

A: I started playing when I was 5 or 6 years old in pee-wee polo in California and then I started to play competitively in my 20’s as a professional.

Q: What is your favorite polo pony and why?

A: Her name was Regalito and she was a mare I grew up with. I loved her, and when she retired she was given to me. She always loved to play and I had a lot of confidence on her. She was a really special mare.

Q: Where is your favorite place to play polo?

A: Wellington, FL and Argentina are my favorites. They are very competitive levels. It brings out the best and makes you try to play the best.

Q: Have you ever played arena polo before?

A: Yes! I have played in New York once or twice, and growing up I played a little bit as well.

Q: What is the difference between field polo and arena polo?

A: I would say the biggest difference is first the ball, and second it is more physical. It is a lot harder to anticipate plays because there are a lot of quick changes. In outdoor polo you can see and kind of predict a little easier what might happen. In the arena it is very difficult to predict and anticipate the plays.

Q: What are you most excited about for Gladiator Polo?

A: Everything about it! It sounds like it is a blast. I heard the arena there at Tryon is amazing and it is a bigger arena so it gets to be a little more fluid so I am really looking forward to that.

Q: What’s your favorite drink?

A: Whiskey and Coke.

Q: What song/playlist are you currently listening to on your iPhone?

A: I really like Mumford and Sons, The Lumineers, and Imagine Dragons.

Q: If you didn’t play polo what would you do instead for fun?

A: I love to play golf, tennis, and just in general I like the outdoors. When I am most free, I go play golf.

Q: Who is your favorite superhero?

A: Captain America.

Q: Favorite dessert?

A: Crème Brûlée. I love it.
