Tryon, NC – April 22, 2019 – Tryon Welcome 5 competition concluded with a highlight win for Erin Haas of Ann Arbor, MI, aboard Quality On Top in the $15,000 1.35m-1.40m Jumper Classic at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC), stopping the short-course timers in 34.689 seconds to top the podium. Haas and Elektrisk, owned by North Face Farm, finished on a time of 37.404 seconds to achieve second and repeating her one-two finish in the $5,000 1.35m Welcome Stake. Lucy Rachel Donohue (Rhinebeck, NY) guided Renee Snyder’s J’Adore RF to a time of 38.103 seconds to claim third.
Haas had the ride on three of the six horses to advance to the jump-off round in the class set by course designer Dean Rheinheimer (Sheridan, IN), besting a field of 10 pairs and also taking fourth aboard North Face Farm’s Carona Z.

The North Face Farm entry Quality On Top is one of her more experienced, but spooky horses, Haas admitted. “It’s difficult for him to go in different rings, especially when the temperature changes like this – he can be very difficult. I was quite pleased with him that he kept it together. It was a great week to give him some confidence and keep him working.
“Elektrisk is a younger guy that I chose not to do the inside turn to the in-and-out,” Haas explained. “He doesn’t turn to the left quite as well, and I didn’t want to take that risk with him. But, I figured with my more experienced horse I could take the risk and try the inside turn there, and it worked out well.”
Of her green mount on the day that finished just out of the podium, Haas added, “Carona was also double-clean. She’s younger and coming along, and this is great mileage and experience for her to jump in different rings and get more experience. I was really pleased with her. It’s been a spectacular week, and I was really happy with the horses today.”
Haas and her mounts will take a week-long break from showing but will be back at TIEC to continue enjoying the spring weather, she detailed. “I’ll take next week off and then I’ll show here two more weeks in the Spring Series. I just came here from Florida, and the weather is really nice here in spring and fall. We always stop here on our way up from Florida and on our way back south,” Haas concluded. “My family loves this place, and there’s so much to do. It’s so beautiful, and we really enjoy it. I have a Labrador retriever puppy and she is loving it here, too! And, I really like hiking and stuff so I really enjoy being here.”
Jumper Highlights:
Saturday’s podium in the $15,000 1.35m-1.40m Jumper Stake looked similar to Thursday’s $5,000 1.35m Welcome Stake, where Erin Haas also took first and second aboard Quality On Top and Elektrisk, both owned by North Face Farm, stopping the jump-off timers in 36.705 seconds and 40.732 seconds, respectively. Jaime Ostos Alcala (Tryon, NC) completed the first round clear with two time-faults in 92.455 seconds aboard her own Chicomio to claim third.
The $2,000 1.10m NAL/WIHS Child/Adult-Amateur Classic resulted in a podium bookended by John Angus of Fort Lauderdale, FL, piloting Brenda Peurifoy’s mounts First Impression to first in a 31.84-second jump-off round, and collecting four first-round faults aboard E Berlin Pearl for third in 76.022 seconds. Reserve went to Megan Kutcher riding her own So High to represent Fletcher, NC, stopping the jump-off timers in 34.563 seconds.
The 1.0m Jumper Division congratulated Megan Kutcher of Fletcher, NC, and her own So High as champion on the week, while Appy De Favi piloted by Cynthia Williams (Somers, NY) for Bluewater Farm collected reserve champion.
Kutcher also championed the Children’s/Adult-Amatuer 1.10m Jumper Division aboard So High, joined on the podium by Emma Brunell of Columbus, NC, riding her own Carlos Santana to reserve.
In the 1.15m Jumper Division, Isabella Lombardozzi of Spartanburg, SC, had the Champion title all to herself aboard Balou Fina owned by Alexandra Carlton, while Reserve was awarded to both Daniela Moguel (Shelby, NC) with her own Chalock and Cynthia Williams (Somers, NY) aboard Fortaleza for Bluewater Farm.
The Low/Medium Junior/Amateur 1.20-1.30m Jumper Division welcomed Judy Sutton and her own Win a Date to receive the champion rosette to represent Maggie Valley, NC, while reserve honors went to Erin Haas (Ann Arbor, MI) aboard Hagelin for North Face Farm.
Hunter Highlights:
The Children’s/Adult-Amateur Hunter Combined Division resulted in a champion rosette for Sofia Baron astride her own Astronomical to represent Ann Arbor, MI, while Lauren McCarthy of Flat Rock, NC, and her own By My Side were awarded reserve on the week.
Allen Nabors, Jr. of Odessa, FL, championed the Foothills Hunter 3’/2’9″ Division aboard Lookalike for Margot Hirsch, with reserve given to Caitlin Gibbs of Davidson, NC, for her efforts aboard Sue Gibbs’ Laarsant-D.
The Green Hunter 3′ Division named Robert Stucky (Waxhaw, NC) champion riding Gyimes for Delaney Hughes, with Jennifer Ritucci (Franklin, MA) and MTM Mochi claiming reserve honors on the week.
The podium reversed in the Green Hunter 3’3″ Division, where Jennifer Ritucci claimed champion with Soul Kiss for Jessica Elliott and Robert Stucky was awarded reserve for his efforts aboard El Jefe for Sharrone Peters.
The Junior Hunter 3’3″/3’6″ Division announced Janet Hedges of Ann Arbor, MI, as its champion riding her own Casillas CH, while Aliya Maker (Dover, MA) claimed reserve honors on the week riding Samba for Jay Sargent.
The Short Stirrup Hunter 2′ 12 & Under Division granted Madeline Fanara and her own Wishing Well champion honors for their efforts on the week to represent Prosperity, SC, with the reserve rosette named to Samuel Leibovitz (Rhinebeck, NY) riding Pretty in Paisley for Renee Snyder.
Sofia Baron and Astronomical picked up another champion title in the USHJA Hunter 2’3″/2’6″/2’9″/3′ Division, with Cynthia Williams claiming another reserve, this time aboard Halo for Christopher Payne.
The Children’s Pony Hunter Division bestowed champion honors upon Grace Emson of Asheville, NC, riding Prince Caspian for Amber Bauman, with no reserve named on the week.
