Mill Spring, NC – June 26, 2019 – Brenny Clare (Atlanta, GA) and Northface smoked the competition in their first National Derby appearance, claiming a Tryon Summer 2 win in the $2,500 USHJA National Hunter Derby on a total score of 180 at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC). Gisele Beardsley-O’Grady (Tryon, NC) and Virginia Barnette’s Januar, a 2006 Dutch Warmblood gelding (Junior Mariner x Poetri) collected a total score of 176 for reserve honors, while Elle Moreno (Wylie, TX) and her own All In Time, a 2004 Hanoverian/Thoroughbred gelding (All the Gold x Kokomo Island) received a 161 after two rounds to claim third.

Clare and the 2009 Holsteiner gelding (Cassiano x Scarlett VII) owned by Ashland Farms topped a field of 17 entries over the JP Godard (Aiken, SC) course, earning a first-round score of 88 and adding 92 in the handy round. Though the pair had never tackled a derby before, Clare shared that Northface’s strength in the Equitation ring lends itself nicely to the Grand Hunter Ring.

“The course rode really well. I love doing handy rounds – he’s so much fun to turn. I’ve done all the Equitation stuff on him, so it was really nice to be able to show off a little bit and do the tighter turns, because it’s so much fun and he loves it,” Clare said. “He’s really good at getting his eye on jumps early, so I can just let him lead the way.”

“Everything rode how I walked it, and everything was pretty straight-forward,” she reported. “The course designer did a good job preparing us for the questions, and everything pretty much rode as planned.” The plan was to showcase the gelding’s handiness in a way that distinguished him from the pack, and there were several places on the course where Clare was able to maximize that handiness, she explained:

“After the first jump in the handy we wanted to turn back as quick as we could to get to the second. He was really great and saw it well. For the trot jump, he’s really great at those, also, so we waited as long as we could to start trotting,” detailed Clare. “Finally, we did a turn after the two-stride and turned in between one of the bending lines, and it was a little bit tighter than I wanted, but he was really great there. Any turns we could do, as tight as possible – that was the plan.”

The duo have been getting to know each other in the Equitation and Junior Hunter rings, but Clare has her eye on Indoors this year, she elaborated. “I got Northface right before pre-circuit from Ken Smith, and then I’ve had him through all of circuit and have been doing him in the Junior Hunters, getting to know him. I’ve gotten to do both the Equitation and Hunters on him.”

Clare concluded, “This year my goal is to have solid trips at Indoors, since it’ll be my first time at Indoors really showing in all the bigger stuff, so I want to have solid trips and improve on all the things I’ve been working on this year.”
